Magnetic Component RFQ Checklist for Power Supply Designers

A magnetic component RFQ is most useful when it describes the application clearly. Asking for a transformer, inductor, or filter by value alone often forces the manufacturer to make assumptions. Those assumptions can lead to wrong samples, late redesign, or production risk.

For inductors, include inductance, ripple current, saturation current, and DCR target if known.

For filters, describe the noise problem or compliance target instead of only listing inductance.

Application and topology

The same magnetic value can require different construction depending on whether the circuit is flyback, forward, LLC, buck, boost, PFC, full-bridge, inverter output, or EMI filtering. Topology helps the manufacturer understand stress, waveform, and test conditions.

If the component is used in EV charging, renewable energy, UPS, industrial controls, or LED drivers, include that context.

Mechanical constraints

Share maximum length, width, height, pin layout, mounting method, lead direction, connector type, enclosure limits, and PCB footprint. Mechanical constraints often determine which core, bobbin, or winding structure is realistic.

If an old sample or drawing exists, include photos and dimensions.

Thermal and safety requirements

Specify ambient temperature, cooling method, duty cycle, target temperature rise, insulation class, hipot voltage, creepage, clearance, and target safety standard. These details affect material selection and transformer structure.

For high reliability products, include expected operating life and overload conditions.

Testing and documentation

Define required tests such as inductance, leakage inductance, DCR, turns ratio, hipot, insulation resistance, no-load current, load voltage, current-biased inductance, and temperature rise. State which tests are required for samples and which for production.

Clear test conditions reduce misunderstanding during approval.
